1. What if there's no swell?

There are over a dozen different surf breaks along our stretch of coastline that our surf charter boat travels to. The closest surf spots are only minutes away, while the furthest is about an hour away via boat. The surf breaks vary from world class sandy bottom barreling beach breaks, horseshoe shaped reef breaks, cobblestone left point breaks, and more. The good news about southern Nicaragua is that we always have waves and it’s offshore all day. The best swell is south and southwest and we pick up north swells as well. We have the advantage with our surf charter boats... you can surf private beaches that face all different directions at any time. Our experienced surf guides know all the best waves in Nicaragua better than anyone, and we'll make sure you score the best waves during the best conditions every time.

Swell period around here is always super long, which means that 1.5 ft at 16 seconds (for instance) means chest to head high. Even if it’s dead flat everywhere, we have some open water reef breaks like Panga drops, that break way in on the inside chest to head high… fast and fun.

2. What types of boards should I bring?

You can bring all types of boards to surf in Nicaragua. The majority of Nicaragua surf breaks are fast barreling waves. If you want to bring two boards, bring a go-to short board thruster and a fish. A go-to shorty for every day shredding, and a semi-step up in case it gets big makes a decent Nica-quiver too. There are varying surf breaks and pretty much anything goes.

3. What kind of waves will I be surfing?

The fourteen surf breaks within our range vary between beach breaks, reef breaks and point breaks. The most famous point breaks here are lefts, yes, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be any fun for the regular footed folk. Here is a list of the breaks we frequent:

Playa Maderas: Rights and Lefts, sheltered Beach Break, near San Juan del Sur – usually crowded

Playa Manzanillo: Perfect Left Point Break only accessible by boat

Playa Amarillo: Rights and Lefts, (north-point has a great right wedge) Beach Break

Playa Colorados: Lefts and Rights, World Class Barreling Beach Break, private beach

Panga Drops: Left and Right Long Open-Ocean Reef Break, private beach

Playa Santana: Rights and Lefts almond-shaped barreling Beach Break (great left wedge off the rocks)

Popoyo: Perfect Right and Left Reef break

Lance’s Left: Perfect Left Point Break, sheltered from the offshore, boat access only

Vera Cruz (Playgrounds): Cobblestone reef break, similar to lower trestles, Boat access only

4. What if I am a beginner surfer?

Nicaragua surf spots are very well known for their fast, hollow barrels; most unsuited for beginners. However, there are several little secret spots that boast softer, fun waves that beginner surfers, and surfers of all levels can have fun on. We’ve hosted several beginner surfers in the past years, and all have had great success!

Lastly, we have awesome surf guides here too, that do just that… guide you. They find waves suited to your level, put you on peaks that are best for you, and help advise you into waves. They are super fun and patient too!

5. What if my skill level is different from other guests?

Most breaks that we go to have a main peak for those who are charging, and shoulders for those who want to take it easy. Most of our surf clients are average surfers, and we don’t usually have an issue with this one.

6. What makes Dale Dagger's Surf Tours better?

1. We were the first surf camp in Nicaragua, We've been surfing Nicaragua for 20+ years now, and the original founder has passed on all his wisdom and knowledge of surf in this area to our surf guides. He was the first one to surf these waves and name them, and he still comes to lodge all the time to hang out and talk and give advice. There are new surf camps starting every day down here, and you never know what you will get. We've stood the test of time because we know what we're doing, and we're genuinely passionate about what we do. We are the Original Nicaragua Surf Camp, and we've got surf vacation dialed to a science for our customers.

2. Our Surf Lodge is right ON the beach with a surf charter boat sitting out front at your disposal and a 30 second paddle to it. The location for our Surf Lodge is the ideal vacation location. Most other surf camps in Southern Nicaragua aren’t even located near the beach, and they drive you in a car to the surf breaks. They usually offer you 2-3 boat rides per week; their boat is harbored about 30 minutes away from the camp, in which case you have to drive in a truck just to get to your boat. Check the fine print on the other camps, most will charge you extra for boat trips too.

3. Our guides pack the surf charter boat with a cooler filled with ice cold sodas, water and beer. We'll pull the boat in so you just have to paddle a short distance out to start your surf adventure for the day. They do this as many times a day as you like, and to any of our 14 local Nicaragua surf breaks. Other surf camps don’t even offer refreshments, nor the choice of where to surf.

4. Finally, our Nicaragua Surf Camp is a lot of fun, perfectly located five minutes from the two best surf breaks in Nicaragua. Our Surf Lodge is comfortably nestled beachfront in the charming fishing village of Playa Gigante, walking distance to restaurants, bars and shops, and is quite affordable for the amazing experience you receive. We provide an authentic Nicaragua Surf Trip from the most ideal setting at our beachfront Surf Lodge. Our customers have told us time and time again that we are the best Surf Camp in Nicaragua. Our TripAdvisor Reviews are a testament to our 5 star service, and experience. Come Surf Nicaragua with us.

7. What if I need a rental board?

You are welcome to rent a board while you are here. We have a brand new Locus Surfboard quiver coming for the 2025 surf season.
